EK102 was developed by Erwin Keith Seed Company in Arkansas during the 1990's. EK102 is a red winter wheat that has shown good grain yields that has allowed it to be retained in the wheat seed market. However, since it is a beardless wheat that is adaptive across the south the demand to be used as a forage wheat is the strong point. A beardless soft wheat is normally planted East of I35 because of better disease tolerance.
