Awnleted Barley selected for forage. Awnleted means it does have awns but many people would call it awn less since they are very short. Barley is one for the first cultivated grains in history and offers many values other than forage and grain. Barley is a cool season plant that can respond quickly in growth and grain production in a short season. It does seem to be the first small grain to be affected by summer heat and very cold weather. Justin Seed strongly recommends using Barley in a grazing mixture.

Barley has been grown in many regions. Barley is an excellent grain to feed and produces excellent forage for livestock and wildlife. In many areas there is not a cash market for the grain which has limited its use to mixes for pasture and wildlife.
Triticale is a man made plant by crossing Cereal Rye with Wheat. It contains many of the attributes of wheat and rye due to this fact. However, there is no real use for the grain and its use is limited to forage purposes for livestock.
