South American cool season tufted bunchgrass. Growth begins in late fall and continues through the winter. The plants mature in the spring. It is named “rescue grass” because it provides forage following drought conditions or severe winters. Can only tolerate down to 7 degrees Fahrenheit but grows extremely fast in the spring.
Used in the south as a moderately good grazing and very palatable forage for cattle but only fair for wildlife. Can easily be overgrazed. A useful tool for extending spring grazing in pastures.
