EK102 was developed by Erwin Keith Seed Company in Arkansas during the 1990’s. EK102 is a red winter wheat that has shown good grain yields that has allowed it to be retained in the wheat seed market. However, since it is a beardless wheat that is adaptive across the south the demand to be used as a forage wheat is the strong point. A beardless soft wheat is normally planted East of I35 because of better disease tolerance.

Planted late, with bad soil preparations, no fertilize, as well as not much rain. I wasn’t going to blame the seed for my bad preparation, if it wouldn’t grow properly. To my amazement it was able to beat the drought as well as the pigs that rutted up the field immediately after planting. It looks wonderful this spring. I’m excited to see how it does this fall with proper soil preparations this year. Keep in mind the soil conditions where this was growing was terrible.
